Am I getting a good deal?

In a few days I will be test driving a supra for sale in my area. It is a 1987 Turbo, with an auto tranny, and 125,000 miles. The owner says it has a full 3" exhaust, upgraded turbo, coilover suspension kit, tokico struts, and an aftermarket intake. There are a few minor cosmetic blemishes. He is asking $2,700, is this a good deal?

$2,700 is a good price. Ask if he put a metal head gasket in. If he didn't no big deal, just make sure you put one in. The stock units have a very short life span.

details?
I'm not sure, that's all I was told. I'm going to look at it more in-depth when I test drive it in the next couple of days. Although it's a good deal, I'm not really set on buying it, I'm addicted to manual tranny.

Okay, I just want to clear something up. If I do get this Supra, I would more than likely put in an HKS MHG. BUT, I'm confident in my inability to do it myself. What parts would I need, and what should I tell my mechanic to do in order to make sure its a reliable car?

resurface that head. it will make sure the MHG stay on properly. as for takign it off, its like 1 hour to do and its no biggie. And f you dont plan on getting a mad amount of boost, you can use the old HG and torque it down right.

/cue buzzer.

Close but no cigar. In order to properly make a Metal Head Gasket seal, you need to machine the block deck too.

i thought that was basic knowledge? would it not even be able to be torqued down if you didn't do it?

Of course you can torque everything down without a machined block. It just won't seal for crap.

A Metal head gasket is only different than a factory head gasket because of it's thickness (can me the same as factory), the fact that it's more than one layer, and the fact it's metal (steel). Metal, while more resistant to detonation (which is the cause of blown head gaskets) also means it's less forgiving to uneven block/head surfaces and therefore won't fully seal in comparison to a composite head gasket which will smoosh down and 'fill in' some of these uneven spots.

Last time I assembled my motor, I didn't machine the block (I cleaned it well with 3M pads, and tools, but not machined) (a mistake I won't soon repeat) and it didn't seal well at all, where as a stock HG would have sealed fine, just with much poorer detonation resistance.
