There is much debate on what the ma70 versus ma71 even stands for, as both turbos and non-turbos have been manufactured with both ma70 and ma 71.
if you are asking whether to use a turbo or non-turbo supra, there are several things to look at.
the non-turbo will get you lower insuranse, even after you turbo it.
people have varying opinions that the w58 5-speed, found in the non-turbos, is not as strong as the r154e, found in the turbos.
the wiring job from an already turboed car is a bit easier than the non-turbo, but neither is especially fun.
non-targa, standard, non turbos ae the lightest variant of the supras if you want to start with the leanest muscle to start sculpting.
both are definitely doable, and both have been done already, and each present different problems. Maybe you could look at it from the other end, and find a supra with the qualities you want, like tranny type, color, targa, sport suspension, etc.....
if you really want a screamer, you should look at getting a bit older supra, 82-86, and dropping your 1j in there. many guys have put 7m-gtes and 2jz-gtes in the mk2. i do not know of a 1jz-gte transplant, but i am positive someone has done it before. by using the mk2 as your platform, you save almost 750 pounds just to start!
