My memory is bad; but from my understanding the w55 was a celica tranny and possibly used in overseas (posssibly even australia) mk2's. I think the most import question is not can you...it's SHOULD you. Even the w58 is not as strong as r154...personally if it were me i'd find an r154 for your mk3...they should be readily available...good luck.

R154. If you were in a pinch and fairly stock, a W58 would be a fine make do gearbox until you turn up a lot of boost.

The only gearbox you'll want is an R154. The W55 was used my the celica's behind the 3S-GTE engine and the 1G-GE (2.0L, N/A) engines. I wouldn't expect it to bolt on or to hold more than 300hp. The W58 is in the same boat, it's ok in an emergency but they'll blowup not too far beyond 300hp.
