tranny for the 7mge vs. 7mgte

Ok as i'm still learning and piecing everthing together on this project. I got the supra n/a auto for 2 bills and began stripping it and the thieves did the majority of the work for me sooo... I'm undecisive on swapping in a 7mgte w/ the auto tranny in which i'll have to do some work on the tranny to support the power load, correct? Or just swap out the whole damn thing and get a tranny from the wrecking yard and upgrade the clutch since there's 2 there but they're both n/a manual trans.. I'm in no time frame here and got all the tools necessary for the job. Auto is alright but i prefer standard trans. just my taste since the matrix is a 6speed. From you experienced supra guys is there a tall tale diff., if it isn't obvious, between the 7mgte auto vs. 7mgte 5speed, as far as power distribution is involved?

Personally, I'd say drop the idea of doing an auto swap. While there are mods for autos and such, the best option yet is still a 7M-GTE swap, with a 5 Speed R154 behind it. For your question, I don't think the auto slushbox ever changed, I think it was the same for all supras.

Automatic = A340E 4 Speed (Limit: unknown)
7M-GTE = R154 5 Speed (Limit: > 600rwhp)
7M-GE = W58 5 Speed (Limit: ~330rwhp)

The other important thing to look at, is your differential.

All Years -> N/A -> Without Sport Package = 4.30, open differential.
All Years -> N/A -> With Sport Package = 4.30, clutch-pack LSD differential.
'87 - '88 -> Turbo = 3.91, clutch-pack LSD differential.
'89+ -> Turbo = 3.73, clutch-pack LSD differential.

Obviously, finding the right one for your goals will drastically change drivability/launch/gearing as well.

If i can't find a R154 tranny to support the 7mgte what would i have to do w/ the W58 tranny to make it support the power of the 7mgte, new clutch set up?

Depends on where you want to be. Somewhere in the 300 range should be doable, beyond that you start to seriously shorten the life expectancy. The R154 is the preferable box, but in a pinch, the W58 will do the job.

Just remember that using it as a stepping stone: clutches are incompatible, clutch slave is not compatible if I remember right, each has their own bellhousing, clutch lines are likely incompatible if the slave is also incompatible, driveshafts are definately incompatible. You'll have to do it all again if you step up.
