I hope you were being sarcastic...89 turbo 5speeds are perhaps the most common I see here. Rare would be all that in a hardtop...only 1 around I'm aware of.

Hahah I guess that shows you how ignorant I am about the whole Supra scene. Nevertheless 5spd targa Turbo is what I want

why are hardtop turbos so rare. i knew a guy who was really into supras and had a targa and kept saying hes saving up to buy a hard top... why not just get a hardtop n/a(which seem common) and do a swap?

i have a hardtop n/a and plan on the swap eventually. is there something better about a 'true' turbo hardtop im missing?

Cost and ease of use. You have the transmission and diff that are different in the NA that you need to purchase, and personally I think it's nuts to put in unknown used parts, so you get to rebuild everything you just purchased. IMO, just buy the combination you want straight off and you end up saving money in the long run.

And generally, the hardtop is prefered for a number of reasons:

- Targa Seals Suck.
- Targa's were heavier (so, hardtops are lighter)
- Rarer (Less Hardtop, Turbo, 5spds were made than Targa Versions)
- Stiffer (BY FAR) chassis than any targa I've ridden in.

So, get a no-abs, 5spd, turbo, hardtop and you've got the rarest, lightest, stiffest stock combo to work with.

Your belief is actually a conservative estimate

3600-3800 is more like it?

NA's came in around - 3400-3600 (Never seen one weighed)
Turbo's came in around - 3500-3700 (I'd probably push it to 3750).

A pre-89 NA, 5spd, No-ABS, Hardtop, No-sports package is probably the lightest Mk3 you can find.
An +89, Turbo, Automatic, ABS, Targa is probably the heaviest thing you can find.

Targa's were reinforced more against chassis flex, so they added weight too. Sports package added the headlight washer (useless), wing, TEMS, etc. ABS adds hella weight, and IIRC the 5spd is lighter than the Auto slushbox.

With 1/2 of gas, spare, my tools and my subs/system in it, I weighed in at 3860, (I could be wrong, I should have wrote that down...). With me and a full tank, I'm sure I pass 2Tons.
