Drives like a tank. (P/S)

A question for Jeeves or Bgrieger or anyone that knows. I bought another 89+ Supra that has no powersteering. I replaced the power steering pump, flushed the lines and cleaned the screen of the reservoir, bled the air out as per the TSRM. I understand the concept of the PPS system somewhat. If the connector to the PPS selinoid is unplugged do you loose all powersteering? Ever take a rack apart? Tnx.

If you have a good pressure out of your return line that means your pump works just fine(unplug the return line, start her up and see if there is any flow)
you can check your pps resistance which should be from 6 ohm to 11 ohm(between sol+ and sol-).You can apply 12 V directly to the solenoid connector to see if it clicks(not more than 30 sec or might damage)If faulty replace pressure control valve with solenoid.Anyway, thats all i can think of for now.Might be your rack that is shot too.
have fun.

1) I assume after you did all that, the PS still doesn't work?
2) I've never had to disassemble the rack.

Unplugged, the PPS operates at full assist at all times IIRC. Raptorracing has the same thing on his 89, which is also unplugged. Basically, the car will feel like an 87-88 does, which is a little overassisted at all times, but really not all that bad.

Now, if you still have no assist, you may have problems with the rack itself, and that's never a good thing. Yes Toyota used to sell a rebuild kit (don't know if they still do or not), but I'd personally rather just get a rebuilt from NAPA...quicker and far simpler. The TSRM and I think the Haynes manuals have the procedures for rebuilding, but again, something I'd not bother with myself...

That's why I didn't know what the plug was, it's for the variable assist in the later years (something I don't have on my 88).

Thanks guys! I should be able to figure it out this weekend hopefully. I spent the last few days with the milling machine and lathe making a test device that will mate up to the banjo fittings at the pump side. Will be able to measure the pressure and head pressure of the pump.It really does look like the rack, the control valve part of it. I know the fluid is circulating but there must be a problem with that valve. The pps solenoid is also a small part of it, but what I've learned is even with it disconnected, there will still be power assistance. Hence, the rack. Given the parts, (the teflon washers and seals), I would like to try and rebuild one, but a remanafactured one is the way to go for now. $330 at Champion, 400 at Napa in town. I think I'm going to forfeit the core charge and keep the old one to figure this problem out. Thanks again, and I'll share the knowledge when I figure it out.
