pls help me with my 89 mk III turbo

just had my headgasket replaced in my 89 and i have no turbo experience at all.
car drives fine and idles well but my boss heard the car the other day and stated there was a bearing problem and i dont know if he is just yanking my chain so pls tell me what to look for that will indicate to me whether or not i have thrown a bearing.

secondly the other day i was under the hood and decided to rev the motor while i was under the hood and noticed that whenever i revved there was a bit of smoke coming from the turbo area what could that possibly be? a lose connection?please tell me.

i have watched the boost guage while driving and the boost comes on between 4-6 grand not really sure and the needle just goes up slightly below the halfway mark, she pulls well and is pretty fast but wont go past 160 km/hr.

any suggestions?

is it smoke like exhaust smoke out the tailpipe? that would tell you there is an exhaust leak, most likely at the exhaust gasket.

if it is smoke like heavy oil smell, then there might be a leak of the oil feed or return lines, or a crack in the turbo housing.

i have never heard a thrown bearing on a supra, so i wouldn't know where you should listen, or what it should sound like. try using a short piece of rubber hose, one end in your ear, and the other moving around the engine bay. try to determine where the noise is the loudest.

stock boost is 5.75 to 6.25psi according to the manal. on the cdn supras, measured in kg/m2, turbos peak out just below the 4 if they are running great.

even stick boosted supras can run over 200kmh. i had mine upwards of 240kmh, but that was when it was alot newer. still, if things are in order, 240klmh should be attainable.

where are you located? state/province/city???

yeah, that could very well be a problem. when my 7m developped BHG's, two of them, i suspect coolant ran down the exhaust and clogged the first cat. my head overheated and valve seats simple fell out of the head from the shear heat. they are pressed into the alluminum head at high temps, which means if the head get s that hot again, they could fall out. 5 fell out on me on 2 seperate occasions. the first time, i had 2 new seats put in, and the shop checked all the exhaust side seats. 3 months laater, 3 more fell out, 2 on the intake side, and only 1 exhasut side. instead of installing all new seats, which were biger, and going with bigger valves as well, i choose to install new head. that, and replacing the stock cat, solved all my problems about 5 years ago now. the engine is still running strong to this day. guys at the TN meets can atest to that.

i placed a thermocouple on the outside of the exhaust manifold, and watch temps from inside the car. with the clogged cat, at 60mph, the temps were about 800c. after swapping out the cat, temps dropped to 550c on the same road at the same speed, only a week later. if you are in Toronto, and come to this friday night supra meet, we can measure your exhaust temperature the same way, and then i can run the same test on my supra right afterwards. the temp difference will tells us how more or less air is flowing.

other than taking the cat off to look at it, i don't know how you would tell it is clogged. i will change my cat next time i have a bhg just to be sure.

did you listen to the engine as i mentioned with a hose to see where the knocking is coming from yet?

you will not find a more knowledgable group of supra nuts anywhere than this friday night, in brampton, at kelseys, 8pm. We work for beers too, which is dirt cheap compared to what shops charge!

look at this thread for more details.
