$300 a good deal?

My neighbor is selling a 1986 and 1/2 Supra. with a 140,XXX miles on it. The only problem is the tranmission is bad, and is currently sitting in the trunk of the car

What are some of the common problems that develop on a supra with this many miles? The body is in good shape, no rust or fading paint. The interior is a bit dirty, but nothing beond what some cleaning can fix.

Is this a good deal, or should I let it slide?

also, is there a way to start the engine without a trannmission installed? If so, how would I go about doing that. Its been sitting for a year, and I want to see if it runs before I start putting money into it

Thanks!

for three hundred bucks? thats pocket change.
i'm no expert but i'd say go for it.
you're probably gonna have to put a lot more money into it to rebuild it from the ground up, but a three hundred dollar start sounds good.
leave it to the other toyotanationers to seal the deal.

If the shell is as good as you say, it's a frigging steal. If it's a manual transmission, the W58 gearboxes are not really expensive, or tough to find. Automatics are even cheaper as almost everyone wants to get rid of them. The normally aspirated 7M-GE engines are also almost bastard children in the supra world, and should this one be bad and need replacement, you're looking at no more than 5-600 to replace it.

Weakspots - look hard for rust, particularly in the rear wheel arches. Remove the 2 panels in the hatch area and inspect with a light and a mirror, and feel around under there. The spare tire well is a common spot as well. Mechanically, the head gasket is a particularly common concern, though a little less on the GE motor than the GTE. If this engine runs. Outside of that, there really isn't a whole lot of common failure points, but still don't expect the 20 year old to make a good daily driver, or the na motor to be terribly quick.
