Help Please. 1991 Toyota Supra Turbo

Hey folks,

My father needs a what we believe to be known as a "Mass Air Flow" sensor. We need the electronic black box only, but we are having a hard time finding it here in Canada.

We have went to places like the dealer and they charge like $1000 but thats probably cause it comes with the whole unit housing, not just the electronic.

Anyways I was wondering if anybody could help or give ideas on where to find these? Also if anyone in America can find these for us, we would be willing to buy it off of you to ship it here.

Thanks.

Also someone post up a pic here of a Mass Air Flow Sensor/meter for the 1991 Supra Turbo because I want to see if I am getting the right name of the part correct.

Geezzz its so hard to find parts for such an old car (

Actually, the electronics are that much. The housings can be had for very cheap. Your best bet is to look on Supraforums.com and maybe ebay.com.

Due to their design their incredibly expensive and run ~$650 USD from a Toyota dealer alone.

If I had a spare I'd let it go.

There is also the black box from the Lexus SC400. The housing looks similar to the Supras, only larger. The electronics are identical save the lexus badge, and will work if they are easier to find in your area.

The engine is the 1uz-fe 4L, and I believe it was the 92-94 era cars. The lexus airflow meter coupled with 550 CC injectors is a famous supra tuners trick to eliminate the ~12lb boost fuel cut. Thousands have run it...which also makes them hard to find. Search on Lexus/550 or Reimer 550 and you'll find the info.

Hey,

So would this be bolt on perfect for the 1991 Toyota Supra Turbo? So if I find that SC400 electronic MAF sensor, all I just do is plug it in and it should work no biggie?

Thanks and you're in T.O.

Also what do you mean with this sentence. I have no idea what you are talking about.

"The lexus airflow meter coupled with 550 CC injectors is a famous supra tuners trick to eliminate the ~12lb boost fuel cut."

What is a fuel cut? Does this mean you can get more boost than 12lbs?

Yes, you can get more than 12 PSI boost pressure, but if your dad just wants to fix the problem, he can use the electronics alone out of the airflow meter and be done with it.

The fuel cut is a Toyota failsafe that is officially known as a turbocharger overpressure error. It is designed to save the motor in case the wastegate fails, but needs to be defeated to perform tuning at more than roughly 12psi boost pressure. This is a realm that you do not want to head into without some experience. Bad things start to happen if you mess it up, or don't know what you're doing. Again, if he's just looking to fix it, it is best to leave it be.
