Question Balky 87 Turbo

I purchased an 87 turbo. I am picking it up with my son next weekend and trying to drive 500 miles home. The engine starts and idles well, but when accellerating, it acts as though it's not getting enough gas. You can eventually get her going but it takes some time. Could be a clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump or some other cause. It isn't the air mass meter. Are there any other sensors that might cause this? Is the fuel pump inside the fuel tank? Any tests that might narrow down the possibilities? Thanks, New Supra Dad.

Welcome.

To be not so helpful, given the limited symptoms, it could be any of the above and a whole lot more. Fuel, or lack of it would be a concern, as detonation is possible, but most people find more power to be gained in leaning it out as Toyota built them very fuel rich to ensure that wasn't a problem.

You might look for boost leaks in the intake pipes, or a split in the accordian hose the airflow meter is attached to pre turbo. A large boost leak will make the computer think you have a ton of air to play with when you really don't. Timing could also be off a fair bit as the ECU can adjust a fair bit. Many things...

I'd have to agree, those are relatively non-specific symptoms. Have you flashed the codes yet?

Hey there!
Try to also check the knock sensor codes because knock sensors will retard timing on the car.
Again, it could be alot of things or a single simple thing.

If it runs, then I would say take it around the block and test it out before embarking on a 500 mile trip.

Is your Check Engine light on?
