How bad is the knocking?
try this little trick. have someone rev it to 2k so the ticking/knocking starts. take a rubber hose, one end in your ear, and move the other around the engine bay. try to determine where the sound is coming from.

a ticking/knocking noise could be any one of a number of things.

you could be low on oil, and the cams are slapping the shims harshly.
your shims could be out of adjustment.
injectors make a rather loud ticking noise, most people hear this more when at idle.
an exhaust leak can sound like ticking if it is coming from one cylinder.
your fan blade could be hitting the shroud, the rad, or something else.
your pistons/rings/bearings could all be fried!

as you can see, it could be easily any of of these from what you have said so far.

I've worked on a couple MK3's and most engines that are knocking have spun a bearing because of lack of oil. But I could be wrong also, I'm just throwing out suggestions. Correct me if I'm wrong and good luck kin-caid
