If the trans was in good shape, I don't see why you would do it. If not, why pull it out twice...

You won't find a 'new' transmission for it, and other than gear synchros, they're near bullet proof transmissions.

You can still order an R154 from the dealer...you will have to hand over your first born and one left nut. Rebuilding is a fair bit cheaper. Most shops would charge in the 1300-1800 CAD neighborhood for a refurb where all syncros are replaced, as well as new seals and bushings bearings etc., given you provide them the gearbox..removal would be extra.

while talking with a guy at the dealership a few days ago I asked about
the price of a new tranny for my 87 turbo and was told it cost $2000 USD.

for some reason he could not tell me for sure if it was an R or a W tranny.

nor could he tell me using the VIN if mine came stock with R or W ...
I guess you have to look at the bell housing or something?

I'd say while you're in there you might as well get it rebuilt if you can spare
the child & nut.

If it was turbo, then it's an R154. If it's non-turbo it came with the W58.

The easiest way to visually identify the trans is by looking at the tail housing and shifter. The R-154 has a boxier appearance and reinforcing ribs on the tail housing and shifter.
