Different: transmission, drive shaft, differential gearing, intake manifolds, cams are different, ECU, air metering system, block lacks oil squirters on the GE, oil filter mount...the list goes on...

Same: bore and stroke, head ports

Of course, there are a couple of revisions to the engines, and even a GTE isn't the same as every other GTE, and conversely the GE differed slightly from year to year. Most notably, the cranks changed from a semi counterbalanced to a fully balanced design in mid year 89. You need to know the car it came from, or pull the oil pan to find out.

would it be possible to put a crank from an '89 into an '87 to improve balance at the crank ?

There's not a point, I've used both. The 6M crank (pre-89) had a higher rev. limit, while the post-89 crank had a lower one. Having used both, I noticed no differences and would rather have the lighter weight crank of the two (Pre-89).

The only logical reason to do so would be to permit a higher redline without harmonics becoming an issue. If you're not shooting for 7500+, there's no point.

very nice. so I should have the lighter crank with the higher rev limit.
with upgraded turbo & internals / MHG / intake (etc.etc.etc.) I could
easily get 400+ HP from this motor?

P.S. you guys are great !!!
love the forum.
