5ME EGR block off

Has anyone successfully blocked off the EGR system on the 5ME? Is there a benefit? I live in an area where smog checks aren't a requirement so I would like to just get rid of the EGR system.

Blocking off the EGR will increase combustion temperature, which, in turn, will cause engine to "ping" on cruising speeds. The fuel economy will improve a little, but not as mush as on other cars. In my personal opinion, there is no needs to disconnect EGR. In order to improve performance, the best way is to replace the catalytic convertors with 2 inch pipe sections, if state/province laws would allow to do so.

I blocked off the EGR in my MkIII. I really don't believe it changes as much as you say. My EGT's didn't rise and I've seen no affects (positive or negative) of this change.

Generations 3 are fitted with knock sensor, twin cams, etc, etc.
5ME just plain single cam engine and it is hard to compare 5ME, 5MGE and 7MGE engines.
