1989 Supra Head Gasket

Hello everyone........

I recently blew my head gasket and was wondering what is the best replacement gasket to use. ALso, I heard that its best to torque your head from 68 to 72 lbs?? Also, there was a different bolt pattern to torque??

Thanks for all the assistance.

It depends on what you're doing. Are you trying to make lots of power? push lots of boost? just a daily driver running on 6psi?

You have to machine the block and head to use a metal head gasket. Factory listing on head gaskets was listed at 55ft-lbs, and was laster revised to 72lbs. However, factory bolts won't take much more and are prone to stretching. They also CANNOT BE REUSED. So, the best option is to drop all that and go to ARP Head Studs or ARP Head Bolts. Common thought is that 85ft-lbs is about the right range.

As for the torquing sequence, the only pattern is that listed in the TSRM.

As you can see they state 58ft-lbs, however this is WAY TOO LOW. Get ARP Head Studs, or ARP Head Bolts, and go with 75-85ft-lbs, using the ARP Moly Lube they supply.
