Differences: turbo vs. non turbo trans

I found a couple of supras local, one is a parts car ('87 turbo auto) and the other is an '89 auto, non turbo with a bad trans. I was considering buying both ($1400), and doing a little swap a roo and then sell one good car.

Would the '87 turbo trans work in the '89 non turbo? Also what about ABS? I went to car-part.com and they had a whole crapload of listings for auto trans with or withough abs.

thanks

I know the manuals were different, but I think the turbo and non turbo both used the A340.

Some of the electrical connectors likely won't work as Toyota changed the harnesses pretty drastically, but you can swap the parts they are attached to from trans to trans as there were no differences in the parts themselves as I recall.

The Automatics were all the same, using the A340 tranny. While the turbo Mk3's used the R154 and the N/A Mk3's used the W58. The two aren't instantly interchangable as they have different spline counts. R154 has 23, the W58 has 21. So, be sure you grab all tranny necessary parts (clutch/flywheel). The W58 is reported to hold 350hp-ish, while the R154 can take 700hp.

There were some wiring differences between the Auto and 5Spd, but there were no chances between the W58 & R154 wiring harnesses (in compatible years). I don't know if they added anything between the 88-89 switch. It's not hard to convert an Auto -> 5Spd harness (It's what I'm running) but IIRC you can't convert a 5spd to an auto. It simply doesn't have some wires and a plug or two that you need for the Auto Tranny.

ABS won't affect the transmission, it's really only involved in the braking system and potentially the PPS (Progressive Power Steering) on the 89+ models.
