Exclamation what i want

next spring as some may have read. i will be getting either a 88 or 89 supra. with a 7MGTE. if the person says the car still runs fine and it doesnt smoke stating that the head gasket hasnt blown would i be able to just put the metal HG on w/o any problems. or is it absolotely neccessary to get the maching to the head and block done. also..lets say that the stock HG blew and i baught another stocker. would i be able to put it on and retorque to 75 ft/LB?? keep in mind that when i put the stocker back on is possible. i wont be doing any mods. it will be just purely for the fact that i can drive it around while saving money for new turbo rebuild and other things. i also heard the head could warp and that would cause gaskets to not fit right. so...heres my questions if you dont feel like reading
1. can i put a stock headgasket back on for the time being and torque to 75 ft/lb to save money for one big upgrade spree
2. if i get it and the HG hasnt blown in it is it possible to just get the ARP studs and a metel HG and put it on without milling or is it absolutely neccessary?

In order of your questions:

1. Of course you can put any gasket you want on and torque it down.
2 You could also try it.

Now for the long answers. Some have tried this and succeeded, but not very many. The head needs a machine shop visit with almost certainty. The block may be alright, but you again take your chances. Given it sounds like you've never done this before, I'm not trying to belittle you, but you likely won't be able to tell "should do" from "you're F---ed for even trying it".

While the head would have to go to the machinist, using a stock gasket will usually seal in all but the worst blocks. Again, you have to know what you are looking for (pitting corrosion and fire ring impressions), but they are far more forgiving.

Now, if the head gasket is not leaking, just run it that way until you are ready to do it properly. Don't even bother with a metal gasket on unmilled parts. You'll just have to replace it in short order.

To sum up what BGrieger said:

"If you don't want to re-do it again in a week, yes, machining is important.

A Stock HG won't hold more than 300-ish hp without trying to kill itsef. Again, certain rarities have done it, but it's not common.

well...is there a way i can use the stocker ONLY until i have enough money to get everything done...if i could use the stocker just for a lil bit i could save money up for the project..when i get the car im going to an automotive school called Wyotech..and the supra is my project..yes the project will continue well after school there..but i need to get the motor at least running to get it there..so would a stocker be good until i save up some money?>REMEMBER.....no mods will be done with the stock HG...

The stocker is fine, but even then you should do a good job of block prep. You can't just rip one out and slap the other in. The other thing, is that a stocker is a little more expensive (IIRC) than a MHG. It's the disassembly, downtime, and work that has to be done that costs a lot for the MHG.
