Opinions Please - '83 Supra w. Auto Tranny & Turbo Conversion

Putting cost aside as a factor ...... to increase power and to have something unique, I'd like to get some opinions on whether it's feasible to turbo the stock 1983 Supra 2.8 L. DOHC engine currently mated to an automatic?

What kind of power increase should I expect? Reliability issues?

Does anyone know what kind of h.p. the stock 4 sp. auto tranny and diff. can handle?

What other mods or issues need to be considered if the project is, indeed, feasible? All feedback and opinions, positive and negative, welcomed.

While it's respectable to mod the MKII block to go turboed, most people have had greater success swapping the 7M engine for a 7MGTE bloack and then upgrading that.

http://www.supras.com - Tons of stuff there about this mod.

Reg Reimer has great documentation regarding his sweet conversion project. Check it out.

Thanks for the feedback.

Reg's project is spectacular and sets the benchmark for power and reliability without a doubt. It's something I may consider, not for this car, but if I ever locate a mint 5 sp. Mk II ... oh yeah!!

The problem in my case is that I don't know how much h.p. the auto tranny and l.s. diff. can handle so to stay safe, I was hoping to keep the increase in h.p. on the conservative side. Also, with the way I drive, these days, I don't think I really need 300+ h.p.

Swapping it out for the 5 speed isn't an option. My girlfriend just won't learn to drive stick.

Anyway, it's good to know that the mkII 5M-GE can be turbo'd. Thanks again.

you can try to get a hold of dean anderson in hamilton who has lots of info on upgrading the mk2 supra, either with a turboed 5m, a 6m, or going full out 7m-gte.

dean.anderson-at-sympatico.ca is his email, except substitute @ for "-at-"

Thanks, Ben.

Contacted Dean and he's already pointed me in the right direction.

Btw, he's off on Thursday to collect another MkII. That'll make 4. Got a bad case of Multiple Supra Syndrome, for sure.

Hope it's not contagious. Could be financially fatal.
