92 MK III Idle speed went bezerk

My ride is in serious trouble. It's idle shot up to about 3,000 RPM. It's still drivable but I shut it off when not in gear because 3k is a little excessive when you are in neutral. It's a 1992 MK III Turbo with 84,400 miles on it. It has had a slightly high idle (800) for the last 2 years, last week it went up to 1200 and I was no longer able to adjust it out with the TPS sensor, now got stuck at 3,000 while driving home from work. Any ideas what I might face before I take it to Toyota or another shop ?

a vac line or gasket leak may be a culprit. Your ICS may also be stuck. There was a tech article I remember on cleaning the ISC on Supraforums a long time ago.

check the diagnostic trouble codes first. (always do this!)
