3rd Generation Apex'i SAFC and questions

Anyone using one of these? I managed to find one, pretty new, for $100 from my friend. He was going to keep it for whatever he's gonna get (he totalled his Prelude recently) but he knew I had been looking for one.

I was talking to my other friend and he definately recommended the FCD (which I want to get as well). He also started mentioned boost spikes, but that was when I mentioned the (temp) manual boost controller I was thinking of getting. If I get the SAFC and the FCD, would I run a boost spike problem? Would an electronic boost controller prevent boost spikes?

Well, the FCD is perhaps the greatest mistake you could make. Fuel cut exists for a reason: thr toyota computer has almost no map beyond that point. This means there is no more fuel to offset your air, and engines go lean and they go boom. SAFC aint gonna help you here.

Step up slowly, increase boost to the limit under fuel cut, and tune it with a wideband, using the safc to fine tune the fuel curve along the way. The manual boost controller should be fine under most circumstances. When you get there and have more money set aside, then the next step. For that, Greddy emanage, standalone EMS, lexus AFM, MAFT-pro, map translator electronics are required to give you a fuel curve that you can tune. You also hit the wall for fuel pump and regulator there, and pretty much the limit for the turbo and intercooler...see what I mean about needing mroe money at thsi point...

FCD's are BAD BAD Mojo. SAFC's on the other hand, are golden (as long as you have some method to tune the car). I'm running the VPC (550cc), SAFC (II), AVC-R setup in my car.

Nah, FCD's are a bad thing 99% of the time they're used. Most people throw 'em on just wanting more than 12psi, when in reality they do soo much more behind the curtain.

SAFC's are handy to have/own/whatnot but they're pointless without a wideband or the like.

alrighty...well thats one thing off my list hah.

So whats a good wideband brand? I know Tercelonline they were talking about it, but it was an insanely long thread and got into it in the middle so I wasnt even sure what (and still not 100% positive) of what it is...

AEM has one, Innovative LM-1, Zeitronix ZT2, etc.

I've got the ZT2 package.

So I think I understand...the wideband gives you the measurements and with the SAFC, you can tune it further?

$400 isnt bad I suppose. But now I do understand the whole money thing haha. I cant exactly jump on that at the moment, but I do have some stuff to seel (6-lug GMC rims w/ tires and 350Z exhaust) which could get me the money for that. We'll have to wait and see.

So SAFC since its cheap, and keep it safe until I can get the wideband...

...for the wideband, do I have to have a shop cut a hole in my downpipe/wherever and weld in the bung so I can mount it? Or does it go right where the o2 sensor mounts?

Thanks for being so patient

You'll need a bung added. That said, unless you're planning to replace the exhaust, none of these recommendations are going to do much for you...the stock system is too restrictive to flow for 12 PSI. I'd wait to tune until you have a proper exhaust. Saves the shop putting a bung on the stocker only to do it again on the aftermarket.

well my friend told me that his brother has an aftermarket 3" exhaust for my Supra. thing is that he's stationed in Japan somewhere. My friend has been trying to get pictures and details on it. I'm hoping to get it while i'm doing all this work to my Supra right now...
