Hypoid

I am trying to round up some Redline MT and differential oils for my 92 Supra. It's a Turbo with an R154 transmission. Just hit 85k miles time for those services to be done.....Do we want non-hypoid oils? Non EP or whatever for the trans, and how about the rear end? I noticed there is a redline oil that is "NS' that supposedly deos not have the additives. I would take it you want this in your trans, but not the diff? What about all the talk I've heard other mechanics saying that synthetics like Redline will skew performance or damage older cars gears because it's molecules are 'too slick' for the older design. Is this a bunch of nonesense, or no?

nonsense. Nobody that uses redline complains about it in the tranny. MT-90 or MTL depending on your local temps is ideal, and in fact tends to help older syncros. Tried, trusted.

Well I'm getting some, do you mind sharing specifically which MT-90?.....just the MT-90 regular kind for manual transmissions? For the diff is it just the reg MT-90 gear oil? Is there any particularly good source online? I found one website that has the manual tranny stuff, 4 qts for 41$ with shipping, it's hrpworld.com.

MT-90 plain is all I've ever seen anyone need. Some have picked up the no-shock versions, but I can't see the benefits unless you're really hard on gearboxes. The diff will require a limited slip additive. Most I've talked to recommend the ford additive from their parts counter, and plain gear oil in the right weight and rating (in the book...I just don't remember the oil spec off the top of my head). As to the quantity of additive, my rebuilder and several others have suggested to add a few drops in, drive around a couple of corners and repeat adding and driving until the chattering just stops. If MT-90 matches the spec, I'd just get a couple of extra quarts and use that with the Ford additive.
