Turbocharger

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

3.0L (2JZ-GTE) Engine


Exploded view of the turbocharger component assembly — Supra with 3.0L (2JZ-GTE) engine


  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Coolant
    • Cruise control actuator cable
    • No. 1 air hose
    • Air cleaner and MAF meter assembly as follows:
    • Theft deterrent horn
    • Front lower arm bracket stay
    • Front upper crossmember extension
    • No. 2 front exhaust pipe as follows:
    • Heat insulator for the No. 2 front exhaust pipe.
    • With automatic transmission, automatic transmission oil cooler tubes.
    • Engine wire protector
    • Heater hose from the No. 3 water bypass pipe.
    • EVAP hose from the No. 1 vacuum pipe.
    • IAC valve pipe from the No. 2 air tube
    • No. 1 vacuum pipe from the air tubes
    • VSV assembly
    • Crankshaft position sensor connector from the clamp.
    • Water bypass hose (from the water pump) from the No.1 turbo water pipe.
    • Water bypass hose (from the water outlet) from the No. 1 turbo water pipe.
    • Water bypass hose (from the water outlet) from the No. 2 turbo water pipe.
    • No. 2 turbo water pipe from the No. 4 air tube.
    • No. 1 air tube from the No. 1 turbocharger by removing the 2 bolts.
    • 2 bolts holding the No. 4 air tube to the No. 1 turbocharger.
    • Air hose from the No. 4 air tube.
    • Air hose from the intake air connector.
    • No. 4 air tube and air bypass valve assembly.
    • Intake air control valve and gasket by removing the 2 nuts.
    • Air hose from the No. 2 air tube.
    • PCV hose from the No. 2 cylinder head cover.
    • Intake air connector and No. 1 air tube assembly.
    • Air inlet duct and cable bracket.
    • Heat insulator for the turbocharger.
    • Exhaust bypass pipe and gasket
    • Exhaust gas control valve stay
    • Main heated oxygen sensor
    • Exhaust gas control valve
    • No. 1 turbocharger stay
    • No. 2 turbocharger stay
    • Union bolt holding the No. 1 turbo oil pipe to the cylinder block. Remove the 2 gaskets.
    • 2 nuts and disconnect the turbo oil pipe from the turbocharger. Remove the gaskets.
    • Turbo oil hose from the turbo oil outlet on the No. 1 oil pan. Remove the No. 1 turbo oil pipe.
    • Union bolt holding the No. 2 turbo oil pipe to the cylinder block. Remove the 2 gaskets.
    • Turbo oil pipe from the turbocharger. Remove the 2 gaskets.
    • Turbo oil hose from the turbo oil outlet on the No. 1 oil pan and remove the turbo oil pipe.
    • Turbochargers and turbine outlet elbow assembly
    • No. 1 vacuum pipe from the No. 2 turbocharger
    • No. 2 air tube and No. 3 water bypass pipe assembly from the No. 2 turbocharger
    • Exhaust manifold plate from the turbine outlet elbow.
    • No. 2 turbo water pipe from the No. 2 turbocharger
    • Bearing housing side plate from the No. 1 turbocharger
    • No. 1 turbo water pipe from the No. 1 turbocharger
    • Bearing housing side plate from the No. 2 turbocharger
    • No. 1 turbocharger from the turbine outlet elbow
    • No. 2 turbocharger from the turbine outlet elbow
    To install:
  3. Install or connect the following:
    • No. 2 turbocharger to the turbine outlet elbow by installing a new gasket and 6 new nuts. Nuts: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    • No. 1 turbocharger to the turbine outlet elbow by installing a new gasket and 6 new nuts. Nuts: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    • Bearing housing side plate to the No. 2 turbocharger by installing a new gasket and 2 nuts. Nuts: 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    • No. 1 turbo water pipe to the No. 1 turbocharger by installing a new gasket and 2 nuts. Nuts: 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    • Bearing housing side plate to the No. 1 turbocharger by installing a new gasket and 2 nuts. Nuts: 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    • No. 2 turbo water pipe to the No. 2 turbocharger by installing a new gasket and 2 nuts. Nuts: 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
    • Exhaust manifold plate to the turbine outlet elbow.
    • No. 2 air tube and No. 3 water bypass pipe assembly to the No. 2 turbocharger. Bolts: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    • No. 1 vacuum pipe to the No. 2 turbocharger.
    • Turbochargers and turbine outlet elbow assembly. Install 8 new nuts and uniformly tighten the nuts in several passes. Nuts: 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
    • Water bypass hose (from the No. 2 turbo water pipe) to the No. 2 water bypass pipe.
    • Heater hose (from the No. 3 water bypass pipe) to the No. 2 water bypass pipe.
    • Install the No. 2 turbo oil pipe. Nuts: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
    • Union bolt to hold the turbo oil pipe to the cylinder block. Bolt: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm)
    • No. 1 turbo oil pipe. Nuts: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm)
    • Union bolt to hold the turbo oil pipe to the cylinder block. Bolts: 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm).
    • No. 2 turbocharger stay. Nut and bolt: 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    • No. 1 turbocharger stay. Nut and bolt: 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    • Exhaust gas control valve by installing 2 new gaskets and the 3 nuts. Nuts: 51 ft. lbs. (69 Nm).
    • Main heated oxygen sensor. Nuts: 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
    • Exhaust gas control valve stay. Bolt and nut: 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    • Exhaust bypass pipe by installing 2 new gaskets and 4 new nuts. Nuts: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
    • Heat insulator for the turbocharger.
    • Air inlet duct by installing the cable bracket, bolt, and 2 nuts.
    • Intake air connector and No. 1 air tube assembly.
    • PCV hose to the No. 2 cylinder head cover.
    • Air hose to the No. 2 air tube.
    • Intake air control valve and gasket. Nuts: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    • No. 4 air tube and air bypass valve assembly.
    • Air hose to the intake air connector.
    • Air hose to the No. 4 air tube.
    • 2 bolts holding the No. 4 air tube to the No. 1 turbocharger. Bolts: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    • No. 1 air tube to the No. 1 turbocharger. Bolts: 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
    • No. 2 turbo water pipe to the No. 4 air tube by installing the bolt.
    • Water bypass hose (from the water outlet) to the No. 2 turbo water pipe.
    • Water hose (from the water outlet) to the No. 1 turbo water pipe.
    • Water bypass hose (from the water pump) to the No. 1 turbo water pipe.
    • Crankshaft position sensor connector to the clamp.
    • VSV assembly and connect the 2 VSV connectors.
    • Engine wire to the wire clamp.
    • Air hose to the hose clamp.
    • Air hose to the actuator for the exhaust gas control valve.
    • Air hose to the actuator for the waste gate valve.
    • Install the No. 1 vacuum pipe to the air tubes and install the 3 bolts.
    • 2 air hoses (from the vacuum pressure tank) to the vacuum pipe.
    • Air hose to the VSV for the intake air control valve.
    • Air hose (from the No. 2 air tube) from the vacuum pipe.
    • 2 air hoses (from the VSV for exhaust bypass valve) to the vacuum pipe.
    • Vacuum hose (from the air bypass valve) to the No. 1 air tube.
    • Air hose (from the VSV for exhaust gas control valve) to the vacuum pipe.
    • Air hose (from the VSV for waste gate valve) to the vacuum pipe.
    • Air hose to the No. 1 air tube.
    • Air hose to the No. 4 air tube.
    • Engine wire to the 3 clamps.
    • VSV connector for the exhaust bypass valve.
    • VSV connector for the intake air control valve.
    • IAC valve pipe to the clamp.
    • Air hose to the No. 2 air tube.
    • Air hose (from the No. 1 vacuum pipe) to the IAC valve pipe.
    • Engine wire to the clamp.
    • EVAP hose to the No. 1 vacuum pipe.
    • Heater hose to the No. 3 water bypass pipe.
    • Engine wire protector
    • Automatic transmission oil cooler tubes
    • Heat insulator for the No. 2 front exhaust pipe
    • No. 2 front exhaust pipe. Nuts: 46 ft. lbs. (62 Nm).
    • Pipe support bracket. Bolts: 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
    • 2 bolts and nuts to hold the front exhaust pipe to the No. 2 front exhaust pipe. Bolts and nuts: 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm).
    • Upper front crossmember extension. Bolts: 22 ft. lbs. (29 Nm). Nuts: 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
    • Front lower arm bracket stay. Bolts: 33 ft. lbs. (44 Nm). Nut: 43 ft. lbs. (59 Nm).
    • Theft deterrent horn
    • Air cleaner and MAF meter assembly as follows:
    • Air cleaner duct
    • No. 1 air hose
    • Cruise control actuator cable
    • Undercover
    • Coolant
    • Negative battery cable
