Looking for information for my Dad. His 1991 Toyota Supra Turbo...Anyways we are aware that it has no distributor, I guess its electronic.
My dad was asking me how much is for a new distributor? I'm not sure what they choose to call it for his application?
Can someone point me to the correct location where it is the distributor for the 1991 Toyota Supra Turbo? On RockAuto, is preffered, or any other OEM Parts site.
The supra turbo in all years for the 3rd generation are distributorless ignition. There are 3 coil packs located on top of the engine, with spark plug wires leading to each cylinder. It is a waste spark system, where a coil fires 2 spark plugs simultaneously, hence the need for only 3 coils.
The location he is likely looking at, the passenger side at the front of the engine is a camshaft position sensor, and uses an inductive pickup to measure the camshaft location, and provides that base timing information to the computer which then tells the fuel injectors when to squirt, and the ignitor to fire the right coil.
What problems is he having with his car that would lead him to want to replace a distributor? no spark? a miss?
Thanks moderator! Actually I am not sure about why he asked about the distributor. My guess is that he is learning about his new work in progress. My dad knows how to change out parts on a car, is a hands on kind of person. I wouldn't say he is the most knowledgeable person (learning how to use a computer, etc) and regarding specific parts of a car. His 1991 Toyota Supra Turbo is his first turbo car. It's sitting in his garage for about a year now, the car didn't pass emissions, and from my view has a long ways to go to actually be ready for the streets. The whole car is a mess. The car is spitting out smoke, etc...Power isn't good or what it needs to be. Plus my dad lost his job a few long weeks ago so not too much funds coming in at the moment. He genuinely wants to get this car up and running but he has lots of unanswered questions... I myself am a Honda kid, knowledgeable on parts, etc, but no hands on experience yet. Know nothing about Toyota. But Turbos seems to need lots of babying? It is REALLY TOO BAD that most of you guys live in the USA. I would pay for you guys (not really with $$$, but goodwill) to help out my dad, since you guys have MK3's and know them inside out.
radeonboy, check as well the link that bgriegerhas, as there is more help in the great white north and bgriegeris one with a lot of info!
Where are you located?
