Hi, I have a 86.5 supra that im trying to fix up but more than likely i will need some help from people who have experience on working with these cars and motors. My supra was previously a broken motor 7MGE with a A/T but now has a 7MGE with M/T but the motor is knocking. Sounds like a rod or main bearing at the bottom end. I am planning on getting a good, low mileage 7MGTE motor straight from Japan through canada. I would Like to know what I would NEED to get my new motor in and running good with no problems. I know I need the ECU from a 7MGTE with M/T and the engine wiring harness. Does any body have any other suggestions I would need to get the motor running good? any Suggestions is well appreciated.
Do the head/block/headgasket while you've got the engine out of the car. Throw on some ARP Head Studs and you're golden :-D [Other than things like front and rear main seals, etc.)

Who came up with this 500px wide BS?
Thanx jeeves that sounds like a good idea since these motors are well known for blowi headgaskets left and right. Not so sure if I should throw on those arp studs though.I dont plan on going all out on the boost or performence. Just want to run maybe 12 lbs of boost or near 300hp on all stock, with the exception of small mods like lexus afm, manual boost controller and possibly an afc from apexi. how does that sound.still researching on the Lexus AFM. Dont know wich one will work on my vehicle.
12psi is more than enough to give you head gasket woes. Hell, most N/A 7M's even blow headgaskets.
I'm of the firm belief that one should go MHG/etc. for anything above stock, and 12psi/300hp is plenty. Don't go the cheap route and skimp out on important pieces, the head gasket, along with the machining of the block and head is crucial, ARP Studs (at ALL of $100) are a cheap replacement to shitty stock bolts.

Yeah good point.I do hate doing the same job twice.Might as well do it right the first time.So $100 gets me good ARP studs then huh.would you happen to know the website i can get them from? Im trying to figure out how to get my pics on the site through this camera.Hopefully ill have them posted to show the transformation on my rusty 86.5 to a good lookin an runnin turbo supra.thanks for all the advise youve given me an all these other guys youve helped out on all the other forums.
no not yet but tryin to get them all posted up.will have the before and after pics.as soon as i get the camera workin and figure out how to download them on the computer.
I found and bought the ecu off a running turbo 5 speed supra. all i need is the motor and harness an its ready for the body work.hopefully it will look good and run good.
i dont mean to thread glock you but is the bell housing on a 7mge the same as the gte? and also the flywheel and clutch? and is there any modifications needed for the entire swap over.? such as motor mounts. is the maf the same or do i need the gte maf? i'm a capable machanic, with the shop.. and i'm very close to doing this swap for a friend. i have the engine harnes and ecu .. and is there anyone here with swap success stories .. thank^^
Not the same on the bell housing. GTE uses the R154 and GE uses the W58 transmission. Different pattern, and clutch parts as I recall.
On looking at an un-namable source for looking up Supra part numbers, the GE & GTE have different part numbers for the flywheels, and different list prices, so I would guess they are likely different, but I've never compared to see. Further web searches or searches at supramania might lead you to other solutions.
thanks for the info..... i've been surfing the toyota forums for a couple of hours before i post.. when i go through with the swapover i'll make sure i do a detail write up.. cya.
