3rd Generation anti-theft system vs radio power

trying to install a new CD deck and I have no power
through the stock stereo connection. there was an
old Clarion cassette deck in there when I bought it,
which worked (barely, through the totally shot stock
speakers). there was an aftermarket (I assume)
harness installed, with well marked/labeled wires.

I get no power when testing with a 12V circut tester,
neither constant nor ignition switched power, key in ACC
position. brand new battery.

...and, yes, I did push down the clutch pedal.

Fuses check out under the hood and the driver side
kick panel. did I miss a fuse? ... or is it the anti-theft
system? Im really stumped here, and I dont want to
run a wire from the fuse box, battery, etc... car fires suck.
any ideas?

If there was a working deck there, there was power. Never trust someone elses labels, or their harnesses. I would go to the toyota wires back there and find the real power leads and see what is happening. It could be such a bad crimp job on the aftermarket one that there in removing the old one you dislodged the connection. Is their harness a sub harness, or did they hack off the factory connectors?

the stock connections are still there, not hacked off.
I tested the power ones with the pointy end of the
circut tester down inside the connector, still no juice.
I did a search on the forum here, but still a bit
confused...on an 87 is the brown wire ground or
power?
My Haynes manual does not show the wiring
schematics for that particular year, the closest is
the 86.5 model, which seems to show brown as
power.
on the net I found a chart which says stock wires:
+12V ignition = gray
+12V battery = blue/w yellow stripe
Ground = black ( I think my ground is brown )

while looking under the steering column I found
a plain brown wire, connected to a blue wire
going to the alarm brain. heres a pic ...

Im trying to find where the wires go to the
drivers side kick panel fuse box, so I can
test for power there, but having no luck yet.

Common ground colors are brown, black, and white with black stripe.

I would rip out the last guy's wire job and get a fresh adapeter harness.

ok well I tested the stock stereo connections
again and it seems there was a bad ground.
I ran a wire for ground to the chassis and
checked the red and yellow wires
(red ingnition switched and yellow constant/memory)
with the circut tester. got a bright light on the
tester ... seems to be plenty of juice there on
bthere with both the red and yellow wires.
when I hook up the new deck, nothing.
tried the old Clarion deck ... nothing.
what the hell is the problem? I checked the deck fuse,
underhood fuse, and kick panel fuse ... all ok.
I have no idea why neither of the two decks will power up.
even though the circut tester shows there is a bunch
of power there ...
is it mandatory that the ground runs through the
fuse box?
I am at a total loss on this one, I thoght I had
it solved and now I am getting no power to
either deck, I am so stumped...

ok well thanks for everybodys help, I got
the CD player working. I was curious about
a small plug next to the main stereo harness.
here's a pic ... the one on the roll of tape.

there are 4 wires - red, black, yellow, and
white w/black stripe. Is this to be used to
connect the stock EQ?(power, memory, etc)
I am putting in an EQ and dont want to use
the same wires to power the EQ that power
the CD player.
I never saw the stock EQ, but I know some
Supras came with them...they're not speaker
wires are they???
thanks.

thanks Jeeves, that clarifies things quite a bit.
so they are speaker wires after all ...
I appreciate it, that will make the installation much easier.
thanks again, y'all.

Not a problem. For the pre-89's I can confirm this list. I just checked it all in my car, just put a new deck in.

Now, the REAL struggle is to get decent audio out of our cars. Whoever thought 4"s up front and 5"s in the rear should be punched in the dangelairium.
