Starting Problems w 86 Supra

Ok, here is the situation, I have a 1986 non-turbo supra. Whenever I go to start the car, there is a chance that it will not turnover. Its like this, sometimes it will start up normally, and then there are times when it will not turnover the first time i turn the key. if that happens then the car will not turn over for at least a day. it will rotate for however long u turn the key, but it will not turnover. I took it to a repair shop, and they replaced the cold start injector and the coolant temp sensor. They also said that there was a draw of electricity somewhere that could be discharging the battery but i don't think this problem deals with the battery. Could someone point me in the right direction on what could be wrong? Thanks in advance.

When this happens the engine will turn over but not start? Here are a few things to try or check when the engine will not start. Try pressing down the gas pedal when cranking and see if the engine will start? Remove the coil wire from the distributor and check for spark when cranking. Check to see if the injectors are working by placing a stick or rod on the injector and feeling for a clicking noise as the engine cranks.

Problems areas could be MAF sensor, IAC valve, throttle position sensor. Are any wires loose in the areas of these parts or in the engine compartment?

Once started, how does the engine run?

Not having a working cold start injector may cause hard starting in winter but the car should be able to start during summer.

The car also has a battery issue, is the battery running down when he engine is off? How fast does the engine rotate when cranking? Why didn’t the shop address this issue? With all accessories off, remove and place an amp meter between the cable and battery. See what the draw is, should be around 40ma, and if around 100ma or more this could cause excess battery draining.

When you car fails to start, pop the hood and look on the immediate passenger side of the block towards the nose of the car. Jiggle the wires in this area and try again. The sensor protruding from the block there is the Cam Position Sensor, and due to it's locations those wires often get cooked and break. Check that out.

I have had the same problem with my 86 1/2 non-turbo Supra , in most cases it would start fine but sometimes when I turn the key nothing happens. After trying for a while I would leave it for a day and then it would start. I found if I hold the key on the start position for a while it will eventually turnover. Still not sure what causes this.....
