I have a 1988 non turbo supra and I tried to turn the engine over with a socket wrench, it would go so far and stop, and my friend says it could be engine seize or a thrown rod. what are other measures and procedures I can do to determine engine seize, a thrown rod , or a stuck valve. I have the a lot of parts off getting ready to replace the head gasket, and I looked under the car and there seems to be no holes where a rod was thrown out of the crank, and a friend told me if I get all the belts off and turn the crank shaft all by itself I could find out if it is a thrown rod is this true
yep, but if you haven't already, try removing the sparkplugs and ensuring it's not in gear (baby steps, but important to verify. Comrpession may keep it from rolling over. Valves will not be the problem unless one fell right in as the 7M is a non interference design.
well, I was going to suggest you get your hands on someone that has done this before and a copy of the TSRM for the procedures before you made it this far...since you've made it this far, feel around to every inch of the head, get under the car and figure it out. There are quite a few things from fuel lines to some ground lines and a couple of hoses plus most of the vacuum system under the intake manifold that have to come off before the head will come clean. This is why most experienced supra owners will tell you to haul the engine and trans out in one unit. There's less to disconnect that way.
I hope you diagnosed the source of the noise or you may get the head back on only to find it's something in the bottom end...and have to do it again.
I got the head off today I just took my time. and there is carbon and black stuff all over the pistons, and the valves look fine but are black. is there a way to check the valves since I got the head off. and what is good to clean the pistons tops and the valves with, and if any one knows what is good to use if the block is seized, when I removed the head there was a liquid on the piston tops and the cars was not driven since 2003 so I think it could be seized up.
the liquid came from the head when you pulled it in all likelyhood.
The black stuff is carbon as you mentioned. The best means for removing it is water injection while the engine is running, but your engine is in pieces. Scrub away what you can with a blunt soft object, and the rest stays put unless you want to tear the bottom end down too, in which case your machinist can tank clean them.
The valves can be checked with feeler guages and the TSRM for specs. With the head off, you should easily be able to spin the block to see if it is seized or not. If it's seized, you're in the market for another engine, or to get this one rebuilt. There is no magic spray on cure.
