i saw a 7mgte supra on ebay that was close to my dorm for school and i talked to the guy and went to see it. well its a real clean car.. it is stock with 100K miles nice wheels targa top 5 speed turbo i drove it and it pulls hard its real nice for 3 grand even.. already pass my state inspection.. ill get pics up for you guys as soon as i get it which wont be till like saturday so youll have to wait. this is now my daily driver..and i need to know a few things
i know the HG is notoriuos for blowing b/c Toyota didnt torque the head enough. i believe its like 50 somethin FT/LB torque for the head and its supposed to be like 75.. other than that what are the other things i should be aware about? THANKS
Anything and everything. It is a 20 year old car, and depending on how well it's been kept, it could be your worst nightmare. I'd have a mechanic do a once over for the usual suspects (hoses, belts, mechanical noises etc) and then be prepared to invest in some work...including the headgasket.
well.. i got a 6G loan and the car cost 3100 after tags and taxed.. so i have a lil money. and im hoping the HG lasts another 8 months till i finish Wyotech and get a good job.
If you're going through as a tech the HG should be a cheap and fairly easy job to do for you. The only real cost will be the machine shop visit and some bits and pieces from Toyota. Mine got expensive, but I was insistant on using Toyota parts, and I replaced almost everything made of plastic or rubber in the engine bay while I was there...some of those hoses are not replacable or at least not easily replaced without removing the head again. Keep the boost stock until you get to the gasket and 8 months shouldn't be much of a problem.
let me upload em to photobucket and ill get em up..but i have another question
if the HG is PRONE to blowing why didnt toyota have a TSB (technical service bulletin) or a recall or somethin on it? ive been looking on alldata and mitchellondemand and there are no recalls or service bulletins for the HG..whats up with that
I will be doing some maintenance once i get the car as in spark plugs checking wires belts hoses changing the oil new shift knob and boot and anything else that pops up.
SOME PICS
personally i love the car. i think the wheels match perfect. plus hes gonan give me the 4 original rims so if anyone needs some original rims hit me up on saturday..

They didn't bother as most of the cars were well past the warranty before the failures were noted. We started asking those same questions back in the 90's and got blown off. It presumably would have been embarrasing to issue TSB's on the flagship cars (Cressida, Supra) so they let it go. Not a safety issue they would have to recall over, so they simply pretended they got it right.
One recommendation even before the head gasket...take off the body lift...it's not an off roader you know
supras on stock suspensions have so much wheel arch gap they look like someone put a 4 inch body lift on. The 87-88 were worse than the 89+ for it. I was jokingly getting at needing a set of lowering springs and shocks or coilovers.
the cool thing was is that i went there with an offer of 3 grand and they had 6 grand on the windshield for their price and i said ill give you three and it took some workin over and i got it for 3
