what are the difference between a bead metal head gasket and a metal head gasket from HKS. are they the same, and if I have a non turbo mk3 and I will turbo it in a while like 8 months will the chaeper bead metal head gasket be okay for the boost. I am tring to build it to do some autocrossing when I get the time and money for the turbo upgrade in 8 months
HKS has 2 types...bead, and stopper. Bead is the one almost everyone uses. Stopper is the BMF of gaskets. Overkill for most people, but absolutely reliable. It can also be reused a couple of times where the bead types are one time use as far as most are concerned.
The issue is price, but being in the market andseeing the stopper on my spare engine, its a no brainer for me. Stopper all the way if you aren't concerned about a tight budget. That said, a good machine shop will leave it bullet proof with just a bead type too. Conside Greddy if you're looking to a bead gasket. It appears to havea little better deisgn.
while I hate bringing other forum sites links up (because I'd like the info to reside here too), this sums it up while acheiving my desire not to spend an hour typing and saving pics...
dont wanna thread jack but lets say i pay a reputable shop to replace the HG and they find out there has already been a metal HG put on and the head and block has already been machined. could i just tell they to torque it back down an i can go. or do i have to buy another metal HG..
this hasnt happened to me but im asking in case.. ya know? lol
no no no..the thinkg is on my supra. idk if its ever been replaced vefore and it now has 106000miles. im having someone replace it and retoqrue the bolts and im saying just in case maybe he finds someone replaced it awhile ago then can he just retighten the bolts and go?

If there is no gasket or surface failure and there is a metal gasket present, I'd give it a go. If there is any hint of problems, do it all. At least should you choose to mod the engine down the road you know where you stand at that time.
