Help Me Please

Hi I am very new to toyota's have a few questions first off. Where is a good place for aftermarket toyota parts? also I have been looking into buying an 89 supra and need a few answers. Can the 7mge be converted to turbo just as you would turbo any other n/a car or would it be more cost effecient to get a 7mgte swap? Also how much boost do these engines hold? and are they strong and reliable? I have heard they have head gasket problems but other than that nothing much. Someone help me out.

so pretty much the only problem other than head gasket and studs would be a fuel cut off at 12 psi. Would this be rpm dependent? and i was boosing lower would I have no problem?

Fuel cut is dependant upon air flow. More specifically the Hz at KS on the GTE ECU. KS is the line which provides the signal from the Karmen Vortex Air Flow Meter (aka: KV AFM or just AFM). On the GE ECU there is also a fuel cut level although I don't think I've heard of anyone ever hitting it. On the GE the air flow is measured with a Vane Air Flow meter. This provides the ECU with a scaled voltage signal via the VS input.

While there are devices to prevent either of these from hitting fuel cut (see: FCD or Fuel Cut Defenser) they're generally frowned upon as a good tune and good hardware will not only get you more power, but they'll generally get you there with less risk of damage to the engine.

One of the more popular solutions of eliminating both fuel cut and the restriction imposed by either model of the stock AFM is to convert the system to speed density using a MAFT Pro. With the additional components for boost and timing control you've got the flexibility of a standalone at half the price.

Old cars need a fair amopunt of attention and care before you go throwing tons of boost at them. You also need to keep in mind that 8 psi on one turbo isn't the same as 8 psi on a larger one. How many pounds depends just as much on the volume the turbo is capable of flowing.

The stock turbo's good for about 14psi. A healthy 7M-GE (with proper engine management) can handle that all day long... the problem is, there aren't very many that are actually "healthy". Just throw a turbo on and watch the dipstick fly from all the blow by.... worse yet, watch the pretty smoke show from the oil and coolant you're now burning. Personally, even with GTE electronics, I wouldn't try for more than 8psi while running the stock timing maps.

As for piggyback systems... for the most part piggy backs are a mix and match affair. You've got your fuel controllers, Boost controllers, timing controllers, and a couple other specialized units for things such as converting to a different air flow meter. The piggyback I personally prefer, the MAFT Pro, bridges the gap between a full standalone system and piggybacks by offering all those functions in one device (Fuel Controller, Boost Controller, MAF Translator/Deleter, Timing Controller). Be forewarned though.... it's got a bit of a learning curve to it.
