Got Scammed...

Well I bought that 1988 Supra. I drove it for about 100 miles and the head gasket went out on it...

I need some suggestions on head gaskets for the 7MGE engine. I'd appreciate it if you guys could give me an idea of what brands are good and at decent prices.

I've seen most of the MK3 owners went to HKS.

Here is an idea what will you be look at.
Engine knock

Are you going to change it yourself?

I just need some a new head gasket unless the guys at the welding lab where I have classes were wrong. We're gonna take a good look at the engine and try to diagnose everything tomorrow. If I need anything inparticular I'll keep you in mind.

They're saying it's a BHG but who knows maybe it's not and I'll get lucky. I'll keep everyone updated.

Blown head gaskets are pretty common on our Supras due to two things: age and stock torque value. If you're not going to be adding a turbo to the engine you can just install a new OEM (Toyota! Not a cheap imitation!) HG and new head bolts. This time when torquing the head down lube the threads with moly and torque the bolts to 72 - 75ft lbs in multiple passes.

If you're looking into turboing the motor you really should rebuild the motor and then install a metal head gasket. N/A's can be a LOT of fun when turboed as long as you take precautions to ensure that the higher compression isn't going to bite you in the ass.

I do not recommend attempting to install a MHG unless the block and head decks have been machined and both meet the RA requirements of the head gasket you intend on using.

Sorry it happened, but it doesn't mean you got scammed, the seller just got lucky (decided to sell at the right time... for them).

I talked to my welding instructor at the college I go to (he has a 89 supra) and he said I actually probably still got a good deal since I only paid $1,500 and it's in almost perfect condition (a couple of very minor scratches). The interior is still perfect and the cruise control and everything still works too.

Is there any sites that show you how to replace the head gaskets on a 7M-GE? I have friends that have done it before and they're gonna help me but I want to know a little about it too so I can help with the work.

If your gonna install a MHG and you will have to take out the block to resurface, this'd be an excellent time to check the condition of your rod bearings

Oh cool I'll keep that in mind. I'll be sure to put up pics and stuff eventually when it's all done. Hopefully that'd help other supra owners with BHG's. I can't find pics on BHG 88 supra's anywhere.

Oh there are pics out there... unfortunately, since these cars aren't terribly common, pics are hard to find. You might have some luck if you search for "dylan wiggins" or "bishop", they both had very extensive photo galleries on their respective sites. I know Dylan's MKIII was sold and he left the MKIII behind him for good, so his site may be gone as well. Not sure what Mr. Bishop's been up to.

I wouldn't say you got 'scammed' either. Unlucky, sure... hell, I traded Suburbans with my dad earlier this year...he 'gave me' his lower mileage 99 for my high mile 96, then used the 96 as a trade in. My parents were here in Texas for 4 days and we drove around in their/my 99' the whole time they were here.

First day my parents left for Missouri the intake manifold gasket popped on my wife 3 miles from home first time she drove it.

Scammed would've been "Well, I drove it for a 100 miles, it blew a head gasket, and I pulled it apart to find that it didn't even have a head gasket."
