A40D and such

So, moving forward in my quest for more info regarding the 79 Cressida I'm looking at, I again come looking for help with the Supra gents.

So... As far as I can divine from Wiki...
A40D is a 4 speed auto with overdrive and no torque converter lockup.

So... First off, any Early 1st gen gents who can give me some info regarding this tranny? Good? Crappy? How long does it last?

If it were to go south, what would be an easy replacement with a good improvement? Mayhap the A43D or DL? Again, as far as I can tell, the 43 has revised gearing, the DL a lockup. Lockup would primarily result in increased fuel economy, yes? Is it a direct drop-in or are there some technical complications?
