I don't have a picture in front of me, so it's hard to describe, but I'll try. (Sidenote, I believe the 'Toyota Terminology' is more correct in it being the Cam Position Sensor.)
The CPS, has a larger non-movable ridged shaft, which is connected to a toothed gear by a smaller smooth shaft. On the ridged sfaft, you'll note that where it meets the smaller shaft there is a notch. Take note of it's location. Now, spin the gear around. At 90º increments there are bolts/marks on it. All are raised except for one. This hole lines up with the notch in the larger shaft.
Now, take the CPS, and insert it into the head. It will most likely not go in 100% smoothly, in my experience there's a point about 5/8ths of the way in that you have to apply decent pressure on it to make it go in all the way. Now, if you're watching the pickups, you'll notice it'll turn slightly. This is normal. When all is said and done, one of the bars that spin should be a few degrees off (can't recall if it's to the right or left) of the 'upward' pickup.
Here's a rough drawing from memory. I can't recall which it should look like #1 or #2... but you get the idea.
