Neutral Safety Switch problem 1987

The switch that prevents starting in any position other than PARK is becoming intermittent on my '87 Supra. It sometimes requires a forward push on the shift lever to engage the starter. I assume that the problem could either be a malfunctioning switch, or looseness in the linkage between the shifter and the switch. (The shift selector does seem to have a little more play than it used to have). Does anyone have any experience with this problem?

Look at the location where the shift cable attaches to the lever on the trans. Determine if anything is loose such as an end fitting, lever, etc. The switch is normally mounted on the trans behind the lever.
