Hey supra guys I have a question does any one use synthetic motor oil and gear oil. I was just wanting to know what is a good synthetic oil. Since my engine has good compression and has lower miles, right between 40000 and up from a Japanese used engine (( I know even saying that it could be higher than what is stated on companies websites)) is there any good synthetic oil out there. I have heard from many oil companies like AMSOIL and Pennzoil that come by the community college I am at, and says there oil is the best. I don't really know. What I have read about is Mobile 1 is the only full synthetic oil. I just wanted to know if anyone uses synthetic motor oils and gear oils and what every one is happy with. Also the car might see some track time in the future so what is a good viscosity to go by?
IMO, and this is very unscientific, while all oil is not great oil, it's not easy to call one bad or good anymore. There are some people that will call out that no engine should ever be assembled in a shop that ever had the presence of oils that are not PAO type, but unless you are taking it to the limit in terms of tolerances or power, I fail to see the gains from the hype. If the owner is taking care to change it regularly with a quality filter, I've never seen a failure due to oil breakdown. I have from poor maintainence however...
I've always run a good brand name dyno oil in my engines: castrol, penzoil, though I have run some synthetics before too. I 've never really noticed any difference. That said, I run ONLY redline in the trans and diff with ford friction modifier for the LSD. It is not a placebo that redline mt-90 is smoother in the R154 than anything else I've tried or heard of anyone else trying. This love is almost universal among anyone that I know that have ever tried it, particularly on worn syncros. The crunch between shifts really does disappear in a matter of a few shifts. I managed 5 more years after I thought I'd have to rebuild it.
There are some other makers oils have also had good response for use in the transmission (royal purple in particular), but the key is to stay away from those oils that have friction modifiers. The LSD needs them, the trans needs to avoid them. It's almost like they designed the Redline oil around this gearbox it's that good.
I dont care for AMSOIL. I work at Jiffy Lube as Asst. manager and I quite frankly would go with Mobil 1 or Pennsoil Platnum. Both are good oils and I havent heard anything bad about them. And no i'm not rooting for Pennsoil just because I sell the stuff. I dont have it in my car only because my 7mgte is in about as, well, as many pieces as it takes to build LOL. Once it is running however i'm gonna be using Mobil 1
I was between royal purple and mobile 1. I am going to go a head and do the royal purple because my friend buys it and is going to give me 5 quarts if I change his oil in his corvair. So I will start with this first.

well you can't beat free Royal Purple. I know a guy who uses it and loves it. I havent seen any comparo or anything between the 2 but I do know they're both good stuff.
I was a Mobile1 guy, until I found out that their "Full synthetic" isn't actually a full synthetic, such as Castrol's is. Check out the base stock, or read up in the oil tech forum on SM.
I still use Mobile1 sometimes, but switched to Castrol Syntec after I heard about the non-synthetic base stock that Mobile1 uses.
I thought that the American Castrol Synthec wasn't even 100% synthetic; they just have enough additives in it to legally put the synthetic label on. I know that the German Castrol is fully synthetic, but the American one is just modified dino oil. Do a search on the net and you'll probably find more details on it.

Royal purple, I use it in everything but the trans and I have nothing bad to say about it at all. Works great, full synthetic blend, excellent performance.
No arguement with any of the other brands, (mobil, pennsoil, etc.) only because i've never used them..
