undercarrage

The plastic/rubber part under the engine is in really bad shape it basically fell off. Is this a vital part or not? If its not on the car will rust start to build up or even what is it used for?

The engine undercover. Many run without it, but it's purpose is to push air through the engine bay and it is an integral part of the cooling system. Some with marginal cooling systems find they immediately start overheating without it. Others run for years without it, presumably because they live in cooler climates or the system works well enough that the added benefit isn't needed for them...yet

I honestly haven't run one for about 4 years. I know I should... I just haven't.

I ran for 5 without it and seemed to have no problems either, but it is something I have planned to get at some point again...it just keeps getting back burnered!

This is correct. I know for a fact on the MKIV Supra, the underpannel diffuser is a functional aerodynamic piece. It helps create a low pressure zone in the engine bay which forces air through the radiator instead of around it. Which in turn helps cool the car. Ask any road racer and they will tell you that you need to have it on. I have mine on because I see no reason to take it off. But you could probably get away with leaving it off on a street car if you wanted to.

one little piece of plastic ain't going to protect anything...if it was going to rust, it would with or without it.

a lil old thread (well, 12 days or so haha), but I had half of one of those on my Tercel (the other half flew off on the freeway haha) so I pulled the remaining part off. I never once had an overheating problem or anything due to it.

Now my Supra... it doesnt even have one. I'll probably try to find one thats in good shape to replace it with just because. I'm like Jeeves and bgrieger though, there are more important parts to worry about first.

I've noticed that when driving at *slightly* higher (not quite legal) speeds the suspension can start to feel a bit sloppy. When the undercover was replaced on two of the cars I've driven that effect was pretty much eliminated.

I haven't noticed a difference in temps in my own experience, but I don't doubt the validity of that either.
