Pulling Crankshaft Pulley

Hi in the process of gettin my head re-built! Stuck on getting the Crankshaft pulley off. I have tried all i got from rachets with cheater bars to impact gun. Wondering if anyone has any tricks out there that may be able to assist me with getting the damn thing off. Thanks

I used a 5 foot section of fence post. Others have put a (sacrificial) breaker bar and socket on the bolt that reaches the ground, then quickly bumped the starter (pull efi fuse, give ONE crank) to break it free.

my 7m was out of my Supra when I had to do mine, I had it hoisted just over the ground from a cherry picker, stood on top of the block (head was removed), my friend installed a flywheel lock, a large breaker bar, a 5 foot pole, and (with me keeping the engine from moving too much), he pretty much hung on the pole til it removed. What a bitch.

Hopefully yours is still in the car because what bgrieger said will work perfectly

Oh yeah. Honestly, I don't know how I used to work on stuff without air tools. 150gallon air compressor, lots of hose, and a good impact gun make things MUCH easier!

Hi I have a '94 Celica GT and I'm trying to change the water pump and need to remove the crankshaft pulley to get the lower timing belt cover and timing belt off. The Haynes manual says to use a phillips screwdriver, breaker bar and socket and another bar to wedge the screwdriver shaft body and the socket. My phillips either break or bend and I've tried other ways of holding the pulley so it doesn't spin all with no results. Any ideas? T

ok so i did get my pulley off. what i did since i had the head off after i got the pulley off was put the car in the top gear (5th gear) and use a 1/2" breaker bar with about a 3-4 foot cheater bar. the engine did turn over a bit but the bolt did come loose. Impact impact gun w/ 150psi did not take it off but the cheater bar did.

Ok, get a quality impact gun. There's nothing that my impact gun won't remove, and I live in the rust belt.

Either that, or your air compressor isn't powerful enough...

crankshaft pulley bolt release

Just wanted to add to UNATUL APIRTED's suggestion of putting the vehicle in gear to help free up the crankshaft pulley bolt.

That technique worked beautifully on my 1982 toyota diesel pickup. No airwrench required.
