Engine rebuild questions

I'm planning on rebuilding the shortblock this year with CP pistons, Carillo H-beam rods, ACL bearings, ARP hardware, and a new Toyota oil pump. I know I have to get a machine shop check the clearances, but I have no idea on the actual process.

1) Do I take every single thing off the shortblock and bring it to the machine shop bare, or can I just bring them the complete shortblock assembled?

2) I'm planning on leaving the head stock and building it a couple of years later. But the next time I take the head off, will I need to have the block re-decked again? I would hate to take the shortblock out again once I put it back in after the rebuild.

3) Does the machine shop do any actual assembly of the engine parts?

Thanks.

I haven't had TONS of experience with this, but more than most people. He's what I've found:

They'll usually be happy to tear it apart for you... but they do charge for the service... so it depends on how messy you want to get. If you take it apart put everything in zip lock backs and label everything thoroughly.

It really depends on the block. In most cases the most that would be needed after a year or two would be a thorough lapping and a check to ensure the deck's flatness.

The shop will assemble what ever you want to pay them to assemble. In this area I'd either make sure the shop had lots of experience with my particular engine or do the assembly myself. For the hobbyist I generally recommend reading about the procedure for installing each component and plan on having the shop do anything you're not comfortable with or equipped for.

In short, don't expect anything for free unless it's posted on the wall. Call the shop and check if they prefer the engine delivered in one state or the other. Find out what additional costs may be incurred and if you're planning on buying all the parts yourself check with the shop if there are any items missing from your shopping list.
