87 Supra Smoking. Turbo bad?

87 Supra MGT. Project car. I finally got it running pretty well. Changed oil twice. Car had been sitting for a year. Gas in the oil from plenty of start attempts. Compression check was good, though. Don't recall the numbers as my son-in-law did that part but he's a professional wrench so I know his info was good. Anyway, day before yesterday, running fine and yesterday a day later the car now smokes and still runs fine. It's definately oil smoke from the smell and the look. My first thought was that we have some bad rings, but after some additional thought I was wondering about the turbo. The turbo sounds like it's squeeling at higher rpm's and we see puffs of smoke coming from the exhaust side of the turbo where it bolts to the exhaust system. I see some places along that seam where it looks a tiny bit oily. Haven't pulled off the intake piping yet to look at the intake side of the turbo, but what are the probabilities between the turbo versus the piston rings causing such a sudden change where one day it's not smoking and the next it is?

And again, car runs fine, better than it did at least (it wasn't running when we started).

Thanks.

Simply put, if compression is good, then it's probably not rings. If it's on the stock turbo it's nearly guaranteed to be > 110K Miles, and stock turbo's do fail. Oil in the stock intake piping isn't a concern as that is cause by the draw-through method of the stock PCV system.

If you're seeing smoke under the hood, I'd recommend tightening some bolts.
