Actually from what i've heard toyota's in general, after their first few years of service, reverse ALWAYS grinds when jumping right into reverse. I've owned several toyota's and i've done work on toyota's from the 70's 80's and 90's. everyone of them had that same grinding when going into reverse. All i know is that its normal, my 87 MKIII turbo does it, my 95 4-runner does it, my 97 corolla did it... now as far as it being difficult putting it into gear, could be one of several problems... 1.) clutch master cylinder, 2.) throwout bearing, 3.) clutch is about to take a major s*** (i.e. pressure plate and clutch disc have a large offset) 4.) shift forks and/or shafts could be going bad 5.) or air in the clutch line causing compression... I would start with the cheapest and easiest fixes first seeing as how your strapped for cash.. 1.bleed clutch 2.clutch master cylinder are probably going to be your best bet to check out first..
