3rd Generation re timing my 7mgte

Alright, this is probably my last stupid question, but my haynes manual says that the #1 piston has to be at tdc on the compression stroke. Well I have my head off and am installing a new timing belt as well as every other imaginable gasket and fitting, and I didn't think that it really matters as long as the #1 is at tdc. The manual keeps saying it should be on the compression stroke, but wouldn't the compression stroke be any time the #1 piston is heading towards tdc? Either way, its set at tdc and I am ready to time the cams out. Any help would be nice

i just had my head off and timed my engine so i might be able to help. yeah either way when the #1 piston is at the top and the little notch for the cam pulley is lined up with the 0 degree mark on the lower case cover your crank is set. then you cams should have a notch also cut out on the gear that lines up with little notches cut out on the upper rear timing cover and line those up. from there everthing base engine should be set. when you want to set your ignition timing (which is where i messed up the first time) you have to set your crank to 10 degrees and depending on if its turbo or not which mine is when you install your cam position sensor, you line up a dot on the gear with a notch on the base part of the sensor...slide it in and you should be set. let me know if ya have any questions
