A problem just started yesterday where there is a funny high pitched squeal that comes from behind the dash guages it sems, or a little farther behind the dash under the hood. It doesn't do it until you hit about 40-50 kilometers per hour, and seems to get a little louder that faster you go.
Wondering if there is anything you guys know that I could double check real quick? OR if you know what the problem could possibly be.
I don't think it's any of the belts or anything as the noise isnt that far up in the hood, its coming from pretty much right behind the dash.
EDIT: sorry it's a 1987 mkiii turbo
Thanks again for all your help guys,
Devan

Typically the needle will be jerky too. Often old needles show this before the cable snaps. At least, that's what happened to me.
Awesome, thats exactly what I needed to hear. My speedo needle does bounce crazy up and down, has been for years... I was hoping it wasn't anything serious.
Our speedometer's are mechanically driven, meaning there's essentially a tube, with a center piece that spins. Anytime the car is moving, it spins. After 20 years, the lubrication in them dries up, and it binds up while it's spinning. I've heard of people trying to put oil back into the cable but in my experience, buying a whole new cable made a world of difference. Right before mine gave out, the squealing started, before that it was just jerky my mph was always a +/-10mph guess.

Who came up with this 500px wide BS?
as soon as I saw his first sentence I figured speedo cable too. I'm with Jeeves on the replace rather then re-lube. You dont know if the cable itself has damage from spinning for who knows how long without lubrication.
Since no one has asked, I will.
What does it take to replace the cable? It's connected from the tranny right? (at least my 4x4 Tercel's was). I know the obvious (remove cluster), but where does the cable travel to?
If you look in the other speedo thread, I sorta circled it in a picture. It comes up from the tranny, across the firewall, into a plug and sits behind the gauge cluster. In fact, if you pull out the cluster, you'll see the end of the speedo cable sitting there. I did mine with the engine out, wasn't bad at all.

my speedo cable is still bouncing and squealing. seems like it actually hasn't squealed much lately and been smooth. I'll update this when it snaps, could be 10 years.
