1JZGTE Fresh build- how do I scan codes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6Gq2_OqgLI

I just finished a strange build using a 1jzgte. She's running and idling fine but running visibly rich (smoke that smells like fuel) and also engine speed won't exceed approximately 4000 before hitting a wall of misfires.

I guess I should be asking how to read codes on this engine package, then asking for possibilities on why it's not building boost or reving over about 4k. I say about because I haven't hooked the tachometer up yet.

Here's a picture of the project.

To add some information- there is a leaking capacitor on the ECU board. I'm going to replace it tomorrow and see if that helps. I think that all of the wiring is right.

Here is a cat drinking some milk. My is he thirsty.

bad assed little project. Ensuring the ECU is working is job 1. I take it there are no modifications yet to the engine or systems. That said, have you ensured that all of the original sensors are attached?

4000 then misfire could indicate a throttle position sensor error, a cam sensor error, a substantial intake manifold leak or a map sensor problem (im not a 1j expert by any means, so I propose only the common things that would affect running on various engines...they may or may not apply to your setup). I don't think Toyota ever built an ecu that could over fuel too far based on O2 sensor, but you might check it if you're stumped.

If as you said it smells rich as heck from the get go, it might think there is substanitally more air than there actually is going in, and may think you hit the rev limit at 4k...

Thanks Bgrieger. I'll look more tomorrow. I'll do a boost leak test on the intercooler system. The ECU is actually modified but I suspect that it's not the modification that's causing the problem. It has a rare Buddy club, Black box which is piggybacked via ribbon wire to the ECU.

I swapped the caps on the ECU this morning. I'm not sure if the board is damaged from the capacitor leakage but the issue still prevails. I'll try to scan the codes. I have to locate the two connectors to do that.

Here are some more pics.

We just followed the procedure but the light is on solid. Does anyone know where there's a good 1jz forum? I need some answers.

I suspect the ECU but I don't want to swap parts without warrant.

the best sites might be in australia. That said, more locally there is supramania.com that has a small, but devoted 1j scene.
