USA 88 n/a supra running rich

A month ago my supra was running rich after i forgot to move the shoestring that i have tied around the afm plug to give it a tighter connection.Since i forgot to do so i started the engine and it made a weird sound and then it cut off.I poped the hood and saw the shoestring and the afm plug totally cut off from the harnes so i had to rewire the afm plug back onto the harnes and surprisingly it started back up.Thats when it started to have black smoke come from the muffler and she eats gas like she gets 10milse to the gallon.I have replaced the knock sensor and the fuel pressure regulator thinking that it would'nt run rich anymore but ofcorse i was wrong,so i did a self diag on the supercomputer and code 31 poped up which is afm signal.I'm thinking that when the fan caught the shoestring that when it pulled the plug out of the afm forcefully and cut it off from the harnes that it would of had to short curcuited the meter.Could a half dead meter cause the vehicle to run rich since i drove all the way down d.c from hagerstown and had to hit 3 gasstation just to drive a 120 milse round trip

Given you have an AFM code showing, I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes, it's possible.

Of course, I would have fixed the harness connector with something a little less Elmer Fudd than a shoestring so I could tell if it was my jacked up attempt to fix a wiring problem or the AFM itself...wait a minute...How can you spend the time and effort replacing a knock sensor and a fuel pressure regulator after noticing that "gee, when the shoelace is cut the car don't run so good" and somehow not come to the conclusion that you should start there???

Unscrew spark plug, or replace them.... The black smoke that that fuel badly burns , a problem in spark plug , has polluted them... Or clear them in gasoline ...

*eyes hurt* I couldnt stand to read the last bit there buddy.

Like Bgrieger said, if it's showing the AFM code then... yeah. Odds are its going to be the AFM. Start with the simplest things and work your way up.
