Problems shifting

I am starting to have more problems shifting into 1st and 2nd gear in my w58. I just changed my fluid, is there an additive or chemical to help shifting. I hope the syncros are not gone, is there a way to check? The transmission has 165000 on it.

What exactly is it doing? Grinding when you try to shift into gear, or pops out of gear?

It is hard to put into gear. Mostly 1st at red lights I have to go into 2nd and try 1st, and just wiggle in neutral then try to go into 1st. I think it is the syncros in the gear but I hope they are not dead yet.

Does it grind when you try to put it into first? If it is the syncro, it usually will grind, if it doesn't it may be something else.

Yup grinding will definately be syncros. If thats the case... might as well upgrade to the R154

It might just be the clutch adjustment, or air in the fluid, or a cylinder is leaking out on you. Check the easy stuff first.

Could be low on fluid, the white bushing on the end of the shifter could be thrashed, the slave could need an adjustment, the synchros could be trashed.

What fluid are you running? I'm a HUGE fan of Redline MT90. It costs as much as gold, but it's SO worth it.

Right now I put in valvoline dura blend. I am going to change it to red line soon I heard it works miracles for older transmissions.

No it does not grind that much. I figured out I need a throw out barring too just this week it squeels when I shift gears. I have a question about the R154 transmission to swap do I need a drive shaft, and other parts or will it just bolt up perfectly? While the transmission is down to do the throw out barring I thought I will find a used r154 transmission and put a clutch on too.
