What does the 7m-ge come in?

I'm new to the board and to Toyota. I am looking for info on the 7m-ge and what vehicles it comes in. I want to use a 7m in place of a 5m. Swap issues are not a concern, just need to know what cars/trucks to look for at the salvage yard...

Thanks,
Billy

7m-ge's came in the supra (obviously) and the later model cressida (88-91 I think). That's it in north america.

Cool. Thanks. The motor is for our 24 hours of Lemons car. We won the Michigan race last year with the '86 Supra and the 5m-ge. This year at the Toledo race, we spun a bearing on #4 rod. I am fairly certain it was a lean detonation problem. Just looking for more power, and the 7m looks like the hotter of the 2 motors. Thanks again for the info....

Lemons. Check out 24hoursofLemons.com for more info. Pics of the car are on the Team Captains camera. I will have him send them to me so I can post them. I kinda fell in to the Crew Chief slot, so I'm playing catch up on this drivetrain combo.
The Lemons premise is a $500 car excluding safety stuff like cage, brakes, seat, harnesses and tires that you race for 24 hours straight. The Detroitish Race (Toledo) is the only true 24 race. This car won the 2007 Detroit race. The spun bearing was caused by lean mixture detonation.

We will get a value from the race organizer in a few weeks so we know if we can fix this motor or find another one.

What is available for the ecu on these cars or is it not something that can be tuned? I came from the small block chevy world, so I'm starting from scratch on the 5/7m-ge motor.

Any help you guys can give me on cheap/free power upgrades will be greatly appreciated. Heck, we can even run the board's decal if there is one.

Thanks,
Billy

Free power upgrades for the 5/7M-GE? Hmm.. There's the old "Advance the teeth on the hotwire MAF box" to provide more fuel. But really, there's not much. The ECU/EEPROM's are locked and cannot be flashed, there are no daugher-boards, and AFC's are not worthwhile for close-loop operation as the ECU will tune it out and rely on it's closed loop maps/narrowband sensor. Most of my knowledge is for the GTE, so I can't even say if the GE ECU goes into open Loop above 68% throttle or not. Adding a few degrees of base timing has been known to give some help. Obviously reducing any weight (though not an issue since it's not in an actual Supra) is good... hmm...

Either way, the ECU's are not 'hackable' in any sense.

Did some looking for you, as you can see, there's really very VERY little to be gained for free:

Hey, looking though the series rules (it looks like a blast to participate in too!), since it doesn't mention it, you could consider a 7M-GTE swap. Additionally, while tuning becomes more complex, the turbocharger and exhaust manifold from the 7M bolt right on the 5M, and you can get 5M motors for almost free! Celicasupra.com has far more information on those types of changes, and I'm sure some would love to help just to see it run!

Little late to this thread, but I figured I'd throw in a little bit more info for ya.

The 7M-GE is indeed limited. A decent timing bump helps quite a bit and so does cam tuning. Custom cams would be a very good addition. You can tune the fuel with a SAFC, SAFC II or, better yet, a MAFT Pro. The MAFT Pro will also allow for timing control and you can delete the stock airflow meter. Any tuning will have to be done with a piggyback.

Make sure you run the intake setup and ECU from a Supra though. The Supra has a modulated intake manifold which will give you some more sonsistent power. Cressida's don't have this. Also, make sure it's working.

The AFM spring mod is garbage. You'll find your AFR in the 10's at WOT. The car runs plenty rich at WOT and the if the stock O2 sensor is connected the ECU will pull out the excess at anything below. If you want to run a bit richer just disconnect the stock O2 sensor and moniter the AFR for a bit. Should put them in the 13's, IIRC.

If you can run a turbo, I'd go with a 7M-GTE as suggested, if not well, you do have options, but the payoff is limited.

If your budget is significantly limited and/or turbos are out... you're hosed.

We are limited to $500 for the car, less safety stuff. Unless we can find a complete 7m for $200, it's not an option. We are looking for a 5m to put back in it, but I have not been able to find any in the yards here in Columbus yet. We submitted a form to the race organizer to get a new value for the car since the motor is toast, so if he puts a low value on it, we can start looking seriously for a 5m or 7m. I should know the value in a week or two. The Team Principle is sending me pics of the car so I can post them. Atleast we had a Top 51 finish (never mind that there were only 52 cars!!). Thanks again for all the info, I'll keep you guys updated on the progress....
