ok so im swapping in a 2JZGTE into my toyota pickup
my problem is finding one at a decent price and figuring out which to buy and what transmission to get with it.
I was on this one website that offered the 2JZ with both turbos but mated to an automatic trans for 1900. on the same webpage i found a 2JZ mated to a 6 speed and it was for sale for 6000.
why on earth is the price so different for just a difference in transmissions?
is there something different about the engines too? or the ecu or something else that im missing?
couldnt i just buy the 2JZ with the auto tranny and then buy the 6speed tranny elsewhere? is the 6 speed better then the 5speed? which handles the hp better? where can i buy just the transmission after i figure out which tranny to buy?
am i asking too many questions? if so sorry. but i really need to find out because it is very important for me to do this swap right and to not blow my budget out of porportion.
The Getrag 6 spd is highly desirable and really f'n expensive from Toyota. It is also rumoured to be non servicable, meaning if you do internal damage, it's junk. I'm unsure if that is completely true or not, but that was floated around the supra rumour mill a long time.
The 5spd W58 was only available on the non-turbo 2jz. The 6 spd is much more power capable, but the W58 may well suit your purpose depending on how much power you want. If the stock turbos are all you plan to use, then I wouldn't rule it out in a swap like yours. Mated to the turbo diff however, the combination I have heard is not all that nice to drive. If you will be using a ford or other diff, and you can choose your ratio and get it where you want it the 5 spd should be a solid candidate.
The automatic is not desired by anyone really, and so they have trouble even giving them away. A couple of us have joked about turning them into plant stands on either side of the driveway. Everyone however wants that Getrag, and that goes a long way to the price.
Yes, there were ECU differences, and it depends on where the engine came from. JDM also had smaller injectors and detuned ECU where North American specs were higher. The engine may also have come from an aristo (and I think there was another car or 2 that used it)rather than a supra if it is JDM.

do you know where i could buy a getrag 6spd elsewhere?
im thinking buying 2JZ without tranny, buying an aftermarket ecu, i was planning on getting bigger injectors and throwing up the boost anyways. need a larger fuel pump... eventually buying the tranny. This swap will propably happen around christmas so i have a little bit of time to collect parts
The V160 6-speed used to be unserviceable, a few years ago now Toyota released new part information and you can now get all the internal parts for it.
Jeff
which would u say is the better tranny then, the W58 5spd or the V160 6spd?
better includes power handling, gear ratios, longevity, ease of maintenance, readily available parts or replacements...
V160 hands down. One of the strongest trannies you can find.
Along with the GTE you will be flying.
What are your power goals?
If you're looking for a safe and reliable 700 or less whp, you DON'T need a larger fuel pump or bigger injectors, the 2jz-gte can run i believe upwards of 15 lbs on the stock twins safely as well. Same goes with the tranny.
Check out www.suprastore.com they offer BPU kits that can yield around 400-500 whp for less than 2 grand.
I'm looking for a getrag 160 or parts or even a core or damaged trans would be nice. timmayx20007@yahoo.com or cell 513-739-4178 . let me know what you found or what you got? thanks

This would be better posted in the Wanted section of the For Sale Forum.
I need parts to complete my build. I'm building the engine and trans first to run around 500 horse with low to no boost for multiple uses from drift to drag.
welcome to 1998...yes it's been done. No it's not worth it. Search on supraforums as I'm sur ethey have some pictures of it. It's cool for about 15 seconds until you start to ask...why...
