89 MK3 Problem

I recently purchased a 89 mk3. I put a aftermarket fmic and hardpipes on it. The problem is when i go to drive it, it builds boost at first then cuts out and spudders and black smoke comes out of the exaust. Could it be my plugs?

Go over all of the intake plumbing. It sounds like a boost leak to me. If the pipes have welded on beads make sure the coupler is sealed well and clamped down securely AFTER the bead. I've seen a few sets of aftermarket IC pipes where the welded on beads were only tacked on in a couple spots and the rest would leak like a sieve if the couplers weren't installed well.

Have you checked for error codes?

Possibly, I would get a set of hardpipes. u probably find a set at www.supramania.com in the mk3 for sale section. Or if possible buy a set of diy kit off ebay and make you own custom pipes.

Why. If you're not increasing power, they don't need to be replaced with anything but good stock ones you can probably find near free from people that upgrade to hardpipes.

Well i have heard that the factory ic pipes are more prone to cracks and leaks. Plus chrome looks sexy under the hood. :-)

They are more prone to it. But I know people making > 380hp still using 'em today.

Simply put, if they're bad or leaking replace them. If they're in fine condition, don't.
