Help with my 88

So I bought a 1988 turbo supra and after replacing the fuel pump found out the motor knocks and smokes! Yay me. So anyway I was wondering the way to go? Non turbo engine is 800ish dollars, stock turbo 850ish dollars but for a 150$ more I can get one rated for higher hp, and the turbo engine (if in stock) runs about 2 grand. I was also wanting to bump up the hp if easily doable to like 300-400. Any thoughts on better ways to go stock or not would be great!
Thanks

Welcome to the boards! Any pictures of your Supra?

Thats unfortunate luck. It's not worth swapping in the N/A engine in my opinion. You'd also have to rewire a few things (if I remember correctly) as well as getting a 7m-gte computer to plug in.

I'm guessing you are asking about going N/A -> Turbo with the engine? The $850 is for the turbo? Then you mention a $2k turbo engine. Is this the 7m-gte or the 2jz-gte?

Give us more details.

Well thank you for the welcome! As it is right now its a stock 7m-gte complete with top end knock and smoke! My thoughts is that its a lifter gone bad and probably a gasket in need of some changing. Well currently I am very lacking in the tool department and can't take it apart and see what I could see like I normally would. On top of that all the "mechanics" around here seem to either A. not know what they are doing or B. LAZY! And to take it to toyota would cost more then I would want to put into a used motor. So I am left with replacing the motor, so far what I have found is:
stock 7m-gte for 2000$ (if in stock)
stock 7m-ge (non turbo) for 800$
stock turbo from 7m-gte for 850$ or for 150$ more I could get one rated for more Hp
Granted I would love to have a 2jz-gte but those still cost an arm and a leg and I can get the Hp that I want from the 7m-gte with out to much wear on the motor! So if you know any websites with cheaper prices, a good parts website, or other advice it would be greatly appreciated!

Also I do have some pictures.

not sure where you're getting quoted 2k from. A good used 7m gte shouldn't cost more than a grand. 2k perhaps for a very slightly used but well rebuilt one, or possible a used upgraded engine. Look to some of the engine importers, as well as the for sale sections of supramania or supraforums.
