87's have 4 inch speakers and ported boxes all around. If louder is all you want, the sony and some cheap speakers should suffice. If you want good quality sound though, save your pennies for something a little better, and be prepared to step up from the 4 inchers with some custom baffles/the large baffles from a 91-92 supra and something in the 5-6 inch range.

The boxes from a 90+ supra will fit our car? Wouldn't it be feasible to cut the factory boxes for say a 5.25" speaker?

There is no clean flat surface that you could bolt them to after cutting the boxes. Lots of round areas that wouldn't allow a proper seal. I've seen 4x5 ovals that were fitted to the factory rear box before though, and they seemed to work alright (granted there still wasn't that much low end delivered there either....it's still a small driver). The 90+ are actually nothing more than a plastic baffle with the screw holes all in the right places. You're cheapest off just making a set of baffles out of MDF.

That sucks... I sold my Alfa, the guy who bought it wanted it just for the engine, trans and rear end for his 70 Alfa GT, he let me keep the speakers, stereo head unit and all. I had put Infinity Kappa 5.1 Perfect (5.25") speakers in the front of the car and had Infinity Kappa 693.7i (6X9's) in the rear. I knew there was no way to fit the 6X9's in, but the head unit, Kenwood MP832U, would fit and had hoped to fit in the 5.25's. The 6X9's are in mdf boxes, so maybe I can put those in there some where, discreetly. As long as it looks factory, I'm happy, I just don't want a bunch of audio junkie paraphanalia laying around the car.

Yeah. I swear you'll never get 'good' audio out of a Mk3. Full MDF Boxes? Best of luck, that's going to be extremely tough especially if you plan to get good staging.

Here's the door speakers from the late model and early model Mk3s:

Note the mounting holes? Those are aligned, that IS how they go into the door.
